那麼存在一個 n×n 埃爾米特矩陣，其特徵值為 X，對角元素為 Y，當且僅當

sum_(i=1)^t(x_i-y_i)>=0

對於所有 1<=t<=n 且當 t=n 時等號成立。該定理有時也稱為舒爾定理。
